Ember's Spell Smith teaches spelling by pattern for grades 2–3. Every forge is one phonics rule, and the rule is named on screen the whole time: short vowels + blends, magic e, vowel teams (ai, ea, oa), bossy r (ar, er, ir, or, ur), and tricky / sight words.
Each word is read aloud and shown for a moment, then hidden — so your child spells from the sound, not by copying. A wrong letter is refused with a soft tap and the word is never lost; after three tries on the same letter, Ember taps it in. When a word wasn't perfect, the whole word appears with the tricky letters highlighted and the rule restated.
The Hint button fills in the next letter. It is always allowed — it just means that word wasn't a first-try forge, so it counts toward the 1–3 stars at the end. Asking for help is a real choice, never a punishment. There is no timer and no lives.
A physical keyboard is the main input; the on-screen letters work the same way on a tablet. Every forge holds 14 words and a round uses 8, so replays stay fresh. Nothing is uploaded — stars are saved on this device only.
