The single most useful thing you can do is teach the sound a letter makes, not just its name. A child who knows that M says "mmm" has the key that unlocks reading; a child who can only recite "A-B-C-D" has memorised a song. Both are fine, but sounds are what matter. So when you point to a letter, say its sound first: "That's sss… snake!" The name ("ess") comes along on its own later.
Start with the first letter of your child's own name. It's the most meaningful letter there is to them, and it turns an abstract shape into "that's my letter." Then the rest of their name, then the names of people they love, then letters they meet all day — on the cereal box, the stop sign, the bus. Letters that mean something stick.
Children need to meet each letter-sound many times, and games make that repetition feel like play instead of drilling. There's a wide normal range: many children recognise some letters around 3, most by 4, and connect letters to sounds by 4–5. It's not a race.
Drilling teaches names in isolation and can feel like a test. Reading together, spotting letters in the real world, and playful games usually work better at this age.
